The caroling column

A reader asked me if the caroling leader in this week's column is based on someone I know. Yes, it is, although very loosely.

In third grade, I had a music teacher named Mrs. Schenke. She took music very, very seriously and was always frustrated by her students. I think that was the year we took like three weeks trying to learn "Hot Cross Buns" on the song flute.

We never succeeded.
