Remembering Crystal Pepsi

I found this list of Top 10 Discontinued Sodas and it reminded me of Crystal Pepsi. Does anyone else remember that soda?

It came out when I was in college, so I remember drinking it a few times. I don't remember much of how it tasted, but I do remember the commercials. WAY over the top dramatic, like Crystal Pepsi was some kind of revolutionary product.

Here's one of those commercials. I wish I could find the parody Saturday Night Live did with "Crystal Gravy." It made fun of the overdramatic tone of this ad:

Eighties Flashback: The Original Party Animal

Time for another Eighties Retro Flashback. Today's entry is sponsored by:

Parachute pants. A true gem of the '80s, providing ease of movement, a swooshing sound as you moved and enough pockets to carry your keychain Rubik's cube, Hubba Bubba bubble gum and cassette tape of Michael Jackson's Thriller.

So here we go. What was the name of the dog who starred in commercials for Bud Light? If you don't remember, scroll down beyond the list of recent flashbacks to see a commercial that just screams '80s.

Here are some of the other recent '80s flashbacks:
Eighties Flashback: Ghostbusters cereal
Eighties Flashback: Guess the show

Humor Me: Total Eclipse of the Heart
Humor Me: Saturday Night Live's Love Toilet

Eighties flashback: Ghostbusters cereal

Time for another Eighties Retro Flashback. Today's entry is sponsored by:

Every popular kids television show, movie or game that inevitably had a cereal to go with it. Remember Pac-man cereal? Donkey Kong cereal? I'm surprised there wasn't one for every game for the Atari 2600.

Here's a commercial for Ghostbusters cereal, with a jingle that was nearly as annoying as the song that was used in the movie. (Talk about annoying ... the tune is now used for some painfully bad car-dealer radio spots.

Here are some of the other recent '80s flashbacks:

Don't eat the red m&m's!

During this week 21 years ago ...

The red m&m made its return after an 11-year absence. It had been pulled because people thought the red dye was a health risk.

According to the Mr. Pop Culture Web site, there was a national outcry that included thousands of letters to the manufacturer and the "formation of college campus societies."

College campus societies? Seriously? I wonder how much drinking occurred before deciding to create a society with the goal of bringing back a red m&m.

I was so much more productive in college. I think so, anyway. I can't really remember a lot.

Eighties flashback: Guess the show

Time for another Eighties Retro Flashback. Today's entry is sponsored by:

Monchichi, the doll that girls loved in the '80s and featured a commercial jingle that still haunts me today. Monchichi, Monchichi, oh so soft and cuddly ...

So today's flashback is a question. What sitcom's theme music featured this line?

"There's a new girl in town, and she's looking good ..."

While you're thinking about it, here are some other Humor Me Eighties flashbacks:

Humor Me: Ferris Bueller
Humor Me: Total Eclipse of the Heart
Humor Me: Saturday Night Live's Love Toilet
Humor Me: Atari

Mr. Microphone will liven things up

"Hey, this party's getting a little quiet. I think it's time we livened it up with my favorite Christmas gift ..."

Doesn't that sound like the start of a PSA about saying "no" to drugs? But his friend isn't so sinister. It's ...

Mr. Microphone!

And here's the great commercial for it. Includes one of the funkiest Jingle Bells dances ever, some really groovy outfits and the great tagline, "It makes the perfect Christmas gift!"

It was only $14.88, which means it predates the "every mail-order product will be $19.99" wave of the early '80s.

Hey, I'm on the radio! I love it!

Free perfume at McDonald's

Here's a classic offer from McDonald's:

Buy five dollars in gift certificates, get a free bottle of perfume!

I'm not sure when this commercial is from, but Mistletoe Perfume by Jovan must've been a terrific fragrance. Probably blended nicely with the smell of a Big Mac and fries.

As a side note, I really like the fashion that McDonald's employees were sportin' back then:

A Christmas Story is still pure gold

A football? What's a football?

The movie A Christmas Story has a ton of memorable lines and characters. Watching it again this year reminded me of how great the elves were who were helping Santa at the Higbee's store.

It's hilarious to see how much the elves -- wearing those ridiculous hats -- enjoy sending the freaked-out kids down the big slide. Perhaps the most bitter elves ever, although I don't know a lot of them.

But, in my opinion, the greatest line in a movie of great lines is uttered by narrator Jean Shepherd (whose novel the movie is based on).

It, and a couple of others, after the jump:
